Birth of Venus

Botticelli’s famous painting of The Birth od Venus was executed in the middle of the 1480s. At the start of the 16th century, the painting hung together with Primavera in the country villa of the Medici in Castello.

Botticelli’s Birth of Venus is based on a poem by Angelo Poliziano (1454-1494) a leading humanist of the day. In this painting, unlike in Primavera, Venus is nude, as in the famous statue by the ancient Greek master Praxiteles.
